Lieutenant Sarah McCallan was a MechWarrior, who served in the Northwind Highlanders' Stirling's Fusiliers, from at least 3057 to 3067.[1][2]

History[edit]

Family History[edit]

McCallan came from a longstanding Highlander family, which could trace its lineage back to Terra, and famous events such as the Amaris Coup. Her great-great-great grandfather was Major Ian MacIntosh, a member of the Royal Black Watch Regiment, who disappeared in 2766 when the Black Watch was destroyed at the command of Stefan Amaris.[1][2]

Battle of The Castle[edit]

In 3057, McCallan participated in the Battle of Northwind following the Highlanders declaration of independence for Northwind from the [[Federated Commonwealth, including the fighting with pro-Davion forces for The Castle. Following the battle, she was given a new 'Mech by Major Loren Jaffray as a reward for her actions.[1][2]

Battle of Wayside[edit]

In 3058, McCallan was part of the Stirling's Fusiliers' mission to attack Clan Smoke Jaguar's Deep Periphery based on Wayside, on behalf of the Draconis Combine. During this conflict, she defeated five Jaguar OmniMechs, before being injured in the final battle of the campaign.[1][2]

Her contributions to this campaign also included participating, with her fellow Kilsyth Guards on 5 July 3058, in the initial attempted assault on Wayside against a far superior Jaguar force than intelligence had suggested, which resulted in heavy losses for the Fusiliers and their Combine allies.[3] Surviving the initial assault, McCallan rallied with Major Loren Jaffray, at the Bay of Kurita Prime. While there, she was one of the volunteers for covert mission using captured Smoke Jaguar OmniMechs, to which he was assigned with ten of her comrades.[4] This mission was to impersonate a Binary of Clan Smoke Jaguar 'Mech, and raid Clan Nova Cat locations on worlds near Wayside, with the goal of encouraging them to launch a reprisal raid against the Jaguars on Wayside.[5]

This series of off-world raids including one on Boltin on 17 July, where a small Nova Cat base was guarded by the 167th Garrison cluster, who McCallan helped fight as part of a Star led by Major Jaffray. During this engagement, McCallan's 'Mech was crippled by fire from a Nova Cat Behemoth, resulting in her suffering severe injuries from a crushed Cockpit.[6] McCallan injuries from this incident were so grievous, that immediately after the battle fellow Highlander Sumpter Burke reported that she had been crushed to death, and by 25 July Major Jaffray still believed that she had died and that only her remains had been able to be recovered.[7]

Task Force Serpent[edit]

Apparently able to carry on despite her reported death, McCallan subsequently joined Task Force Serpent, surviving the fighting on Huntress.[1][2]

BattleMech[edit]

McCallen was known to have piloted a GAL-1GLS Gallowglas, gifted to her by Loren Jaffray in 3057, which she nicknamed "Bannockburn". After using this 'Mech during the Battle of Wayside, by 3067 McCallen was instead piloting a GAL-3GLS Gallowglas, which she received from the Wolf's Dragoons for her skill and daring.[1][2][3]

During her covert mission against Clan Nova Cat in 3058, McCallen also piloted a captured Smoke Jaguar Ryoken OmniMech.[6]

Notes[edit]

  • Sarah McCallan's name is spelt, in some sources, as Sara Macallen or Sarah Macallan.[3][6]
  • McCallan was reported to have died in Impetus of War, with Major Jaffray explicitly commiserating with his troops about her death, and his internal monologue recalling the recovery of her body. It therefore appears the intention was that McCallan had certainly died. However this appears to have been retconned by Technical Readout: 3055 Upgrade and Technical Readout: Clan Invasion, which indicate McCallan was only injured, and survived to fight in subsequent conflicts.
